Scope and Content Fraserburgh Harbour, Aberdeenshire (Aberdeenshire council area) Fraserburgh Harbour had its origins in the 16th century, but was extensively remodelled from 1807 to become one of the most complex tidal harbours in Scotland, with a massive L-plan outer breakwater built between 1855 and c1880. This view shows part of the inner harbour, with a section of the breakwater in the background. By the 1980s the harbour was one of the most important white-fishing ports in Scotland, and the vessels in this view were typical of the period. Since 1980 the character of the fishing fleet operating from Fraserburgh has changed markedly, with fewer, larger vessels, mostly steel-hulled replacing the large fleet of wooden vessels of moderate size represented here.
