Date 31/3/1980

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 570308

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Auchroisk Distillery, Mulben, Banffshire This distillery was built by International Distillers and Vintners as a showpiece distillery, flagship of their Scotch Whisky business. It was the largest malt whisky distillery built in the 1970s. This view shows the four spirit stills, with their condensers to the right. The clean design is noteworthy, as is the use of 'waisted', or 'lantern-headed' stills, unusual at that date. The stills were steam heated, typical of the period. IDV were taken over by Watney Mann, and then by Grand Metropolitan Hotels in 1975. In 1998 IDV amalgamated with United Distillers to form United Distillers and Vintners, a subsidiary of the Diageo Corporation. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
