Scope and Content Glenmoray-Glenlivet Distillery, Bruceland Road, Elgin, Morayshire (Moray council area) This distillery was converted from a brewery in 1897 by the Glen Moray Glenlivet Distillery Co Ltd. It was silent from 1910 to c1923, when it was acquired by Macdonald and Muir, blenders, Leith. It is still owned by their successors, Glenmorangie plc. This view shows the stillhouse. There were originally two coal-fired stills, Two more were added in 1958, and the installation converted to steam heating, probably in the 1960s. The two stills on the right appear to have been the original installation. This distillery was a product of the 1890s whisky boom, which was at its height in Moray and Banffshire. Conversion of breweries and mills was a feature of the boom, probably because such establishments had water rights. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
