Scope and Content Glenmoray-Glenlivet Distillery, Bruceland Road, Elgin, Morayshire (Moray council area) This distillery was converted from a brewery in 1897 by the Glen Moray Glenlivet Distillery Co Ltd. It was silent from 1910 to c1923, when it was acquired by Macdonald and Muir, blenders, Leith. It is still owned by their successors, Glenmorangie plc. This view shows the mash tun, of the traditional type, when the wort had been drained at the end of a mash, leaving the husks of the malt, known as draff. The revolving rakes were used to stir the malt and water mixture during the mashing process. This distillery was a product of the 1890s whisky boom, which was at its height in Moray and Banffshire. Conversion of mills and breweries to distilleries was a feature of the boom. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
