Scope and Content Pittyvaich-Glenlivet Distillery, Dufftown, Banffshire (Moray council area) This distillery was built on the hill above the Dufftown-Glenlivet Distillery by Arthur Bell and Sons Ltd, and managed jointly with it. After Bells were taken over by United Distillers it became surplus to requirements, and closed in 1993. This view shows the tun room, with its steel washbacks, used for fermenting the sugary wort from the mash tun to make wash, a weakly alcoholic liquor, for distillation. These non-traditional washbacks were popular in the 1970s. Pittyvaich was built at a time when forecasts of the growth of the world markets for Scotch Whisky were very positive. The oil crisis of 1974 made these forecasts unrealistic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
