Scope and Content Glendronach Distillery, Forgue, Aberdeenshire (Aberdeenshire council area) This distillery was founded in 1826 by the Glendronach Distillery Co. It had a complicated pattern of ownership until 1960, when it was acquired by William Teacher and Sons. It is still owned by their successors, Allied Distillers. This view shows the distillery from the west, with warehouses in front and the productive buildings behind. Note the large chimney; the stills were coal-fired in 1980, and the floor maltings were still working; the pagoda roofed malt kiln can just be seen This was one of the distilleries built under the provisions of the Act of 1823, probably to add value to locally-grown barley. Its isolated position has been a disadvantage, and it has only operated intermittently for many years. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
