Description Tormore Distillery, Interior View showing barrels in warehouse

Date 28/3/1980

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 570235

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Tormore Distillery, Advie, Morayshire This distillery was built in 1958-60 by Long John Distillers Ltd, to designs by Sir Albert Richardson, with associated housing in a designed landscape, It was the first 'greenfield' distillery built in the 20th century. This view shows the interior of one of the warehouses, which are on the other side of a main road from the distillery. This shows an unusual method of warehousing, with groups of casks being placed on pallets. The placing of casks vertically for maturing whisky has not been practised generally, largely because it is so easy to move casks on their sides, by rolling them. All spirit must be matured in cask for at least three years before it can be called whisky. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
