Description Rothes, Glen Grant Distillery View from SSW showing part of S and W fronts of stillhouse

Date 27/3/1980

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 570177

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Glen Grant Distillery, Rothes, Morayshire This distillery was founded in 1840 by John and James Grant, from Aberlour Distillery. It remained independent until 1953 when it amalgamated with the Glenlivet distillery, and is now part of the Seagram empire, which was for sale at the end of 2000. This view shows the exterior of the old stillhouse, which was still coal-fired in 1980. The rectangular cast iron tank contained the worms for condensing the low-wines and spirit. The overflow from the worm tank drove a water wheel for the rummagers. Rummagers were copper chains which turned inside coal-fired wash stills to prevent a sticky deposit forming on the still bottom, with a risk of overheating and possiby of the burning-out of the bottom. This stillhouse was demolished in the 1980s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
