Scope and Content Teaninich Distillery, Alness, Ross and Cromarty This distillery was founded in 1817 by Captain Hugh Munro of Teaninich. It was eventually acquired by The Distillers' Co Ltd, who added a new six-still section in 1971, rebuilt the 'old side' in 1974. and installed a dark grains (byproduct) plant. This view shows the distillery from the north, with the 1971 stillhouse in the centre, and the rebuilt 'old side' to the right. The tall buildings to the left housed the dark grains plant. The distillery was closed from 1985 to 1990, and the 'old side was demolished in 1998. The original distillery was founded under the provisions of the Small Stills Act of 1816, passed by Parliament to encourage small-scale distillers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
