Scope and Content Glenmorangie Distillery, Tain, Ross and Cromarty This distillery was converted from a brewery in 1843 by William Mathieson, and completely rebuilt in 1887 by the Glenmorangie Distillery Co Ltd. It was taken over in 1918 by MacDonald and Muir, whose successor company, Glenmorangie plc still own it. This view shows stainless-steel 'wash-backs' installed in 1979. In these vessels the sugary malt liquor - wort - from the mash tun is fermented by the addition of yeast to make the alcoholic 'wash' which is distilled to make whisky. MacDonald and Muir were among the first distillers after World War II to realise that there was a market for single malt whiskies. The distillery was enlarged in 1979 to cope with increasing demand.
