Scope and Content Weir, Blantyre Mills, Blantyre, Lanarkshire The Blantyre Cotton Mills were founded by Henry Monteith, Bogle and Co in 1785 as cotton-spinning mills. They were later extended to produce printed calicos. They used the water-power of the Clyde. The mills were demolished in the early 20th century. This view shows the curved weir on the river Clyde from which the water was drawn to power the mills. The lade came off the right-hand side of the weir, and by 1980 drove the turbine of a wood-flour mill. The gentle fall of the Clyde below Stonebyres fall made it difficult to derive much water-power from it. The Blantyre Mills were the largest users of water-power below the falls.
