Scope and Content Crinan Canal, Ardrishaig, Argyll The Crinan Canal was constructed to allow the typical small trading craft of the time to avoid the long and potentially dangerous voyage round the Mull of Kintyre. It was designed by John Rennie, and runs from Ardrishaig to Crinan. This view shows the second lock at Ardrishaig, with the marine biological research vessel Calanus in the lock chamber, being lowered. Note the heavy wooden balance-beam of this manually-operated lock. The canal is now used mainly by yachts, but fishing boats still use Crinan Basin. Until the 1970s the canal was still used by puffers trading to Islay, or up the west coast. The VIC 32, a converted puffer, is based at Crinan. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
