Catalogue Number SC 569965

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Press Shop, Dennystown Forge, Dalreoch, Dunbartonshire This forge was established to make large malleable-iron forgings for shipbuilders and marine engineers, and was was one of a number of such establishments, mostly situated in the west of Scotland. This one made the transition to steel, but closed in 1980. This view shows a shafting lathe by Noble and Lund, an English company. This machine could machine long sections of shafting. There is a second machine of the same type to the right. The Dennystown Forge latterly specialised in making propeller shafts. These required accurate machining, and a very high standard of surface finish, hence the well-lit machine shop. The works had been demolished by 1982. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
