Scope and Content Press Shop, Dennystown Forge, Dalreoch, Dunbartonshire This forge was established to make large malleable-iron forgings for shipbuilders and marine engineers, and was was one of a number of such establishments, mostly situated in the west of Scotland. This one made the transition to steel, but closed in 1980. This view shows the light and airy machine shop, with three bays. The timber-framed roofs were supported on cast iron stanchions, with diagonal timber bracing. Note the extensive roof glazing. Part of the bay on the left had already been cleared. The Dennystown Forge latterly specialised in making propeller shafts. These required accurate machining and a very high standard of surface finish, hence the well-lit machine shop. The works had been demolished by 1982. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
