Scope and Content Former clay-pipe factory, Bain Street, Moncur Street and Gibson Street, Glasgow This very large factory was built to designs by M Forsyth for W White and Son, to make clay tobacco pipes, which were smoked extensively both at home and abroad. Whites, founded in Gibson Street in 1824 were the largest firm of the kind in Glasgow. This view shows the oriel window on the south (Moncur Street) frontage, with moulded bricks of two colours used to achieve a very rich effect. The building was designed to be built in stone, as the neoclassical detailing suggests. Clay tobacco pipes were moulded by hand, so the building had good natural lighting. The kilns were in a central courtyard, and had gone by the 1960s. The bulk of the works survived into the 1990s, converted into flatted offices. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
