Scope and Content Detail of first-floor room in Ardmaddy Castle, Argyll and Bute Ardmaddy Castle was originally a 15th-century tower-house which was transformed into a Palladian mansion for Colin Campbell in 1737. In 1862 David Bryce (1803-76) built a new wing using plans prepared in 1837 by James Gillespie Graham (1766-1855). The principal apartments are situated on the first floor of the part of the house built in 1737. The rooms, including this one, have retained most of their 18th-century fittings, such as wooden panelling and six-panelled doors. Some of the doors have their original brass handles and locks. The 18th-century moulded fireplace is carved from local marble obtained from a quarry 660m south of the castle. It has quarter-round curves where the jambs and lintel meet.
