Scope and Content Detail of pediment of Ardmaddy Castle, Argyll and Bute Ardmaddy Castle was originally a 15th-century tower-house which was transformed into a Palladian mansion for Colin Campbell in 1737. In 1862 David Bryce (1803-76) built a new wing using plans prepared in 1837 by James Gillespie Graham (1766-1855). The principal front of the part of the house built in 1737 has a three-bayed Ionic portico which terminates in a triangular pediment. In the tympanum, or space enclosed by the pediment, there is the coat of arms of the (Campbell) Earls of Breadalbane. The coat of arms is carved in relief and includes a galley with a furled sail, oars in action and pennon flying. Above the shield is an earl's coronet and helmet and below, the motto 'FOLLOW ME'. Above the coat of the arms the date 1737 is incised. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
