Scope and Content View of Ardmaddy Castle from the north, Argyll and Bute Ardmaddy Castle was originally a 15th-century tower-house which was transformed into a Palladian mansion for Colin Campbell in 1737. In 1862 David Bryce (1803-76) built a new wing using plans prepared in 1837 by James Gillespie Graham (1766-1855). To the left is the principal façade of the Palladian mansion. The original tower-house was rectangular in plan. This was turned into a U-plan house by the addition of a single-roomed wing on either end of the rectangle, creating a central recess. A new storey was added to this U-plan house, a forestair giving access to the first floor. Set into the recess is a three-bayed Ionic portico with four columns and a pediment. The other sides of the Palladian mansion are very plain. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
