Scope and Content View of the north-east front of Ardmaddy Castle, Argyll and Bute Ardmaddy Castle was originally a 15th-century tower-house which was transformed into a Palladian mansion for Colin Campbell in 1737. In 1862 David Bryce (1803-76) built a new wing using plans prepared in 1837 by James Gillespie Graham (1766-1855). Each projecting wing has a central window on both the ground and first floors. The windows on the ground floor have moulded surrounds, or architraves, with lugs at the corners. The windows on the first floor are arched with Gibbsian surrounds. This is the principal façade of the Palladian mansion. The original tower-house was rectangular in plan. This was turned into a U-plan house by the addition of a single-roomed wing on either end of the rectangle, creating a central recess. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
