Scope and Content View of Ardanaiseig House from the north-east, Argyll and Bute Ardanaiseig, a mansion formerly known as northew Inverawe, was built for James Archibald Campbell, a descendant of the Campbell family of Inverawe. Ardanaiseig was designed by William Burn (1789-1870) and his original drawings of the house are dated 1833. The principal apartments of the house form a squarish block on the south-east corner of the site (left), containing two floors and a basement. This block is linked by a north wing (centre) to a stable court (right) which forms three sides of a square. Comfort, privacy and the segregation of the services were important considerations in Burn's country house designs. His houses were rarely higher than two storeys and an attic and the family and service wings were very clearly defined. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
