Scope and Content View of gate lodge at Airds House, Argyll and Bute Airds House is a well-preserved Classical mansion which was built for Donald Campbell of Airds in 1738-9. The architect is unknown but the inspiration for its design may have been derived partly from the south front of Marble Hill House in Twickenham. This gate lodge is at the north-east end of the former main drive to the mansion and is probably of late 18th- or early 19th-century date. It is a simple single-storeyed rectangular structure with a semi-hexagonal bay. The painted rubble cottage with harled rubble masonry and a hipped slated roof is known locally as the 'Threepenny Bit'. As their name indicates, gate lodges were residences for gatekeepers who protected the entrances to an estate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
