Scope and Content Detail of gun-loop in west tower of Lochnell House, Argyll and Bute The L-plan Lochnell House consists of three linked buildings dating to different periods, ranging from the late 17th to the late 19th century. The oldest part of the house was probably built for Alexander Campbell, who succeeded to the property in 1671. In 1816-20 the final part of the house was built to the design of Archibald Elliot (1760-1823) in a castellated style. The principal front of this part of the building consists of a central block flanked by circular and octagonal towers. The west tower to the right of the central block is decorated with large crosslet loops. The loop is carved from light brown sandstone, as are the rest of the surrounds.
