Scope and Content View of ground-floor room from the west in Barcaldine House, Argyll and Bute In the early 18th century the Campbells of Barcaldine abandoned Barcaldine Castle and built a new house 6km to the east. This was extended in 1733 and then superseded c.1759 by a new mansion which was extended and altered over the next two centuries. This drawing room is in the part of the house built c.1759. However, the interior of this part was remodelled in the early 19th century. The drawing room is decorated with Adam-style plasterwork on the walls and ceiling. The plasterwork includes medallions of putti, or small naked cherubs, playing musical instruments. This motif is repeated on the central panel of the pine chimneypiece which encloses a beaded marble fire surround. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
