Scope and Content Hampden Park Stadium, Mount Annan Drive, Mount Florida, Glasgow, from west Hampden Park is Scotland's national football stadium. It opened at its present site in 1903, home ground then as now to Queen's Park, an amateur club, formed in 1867 and Scotland's oldest football club. Originally designed by Archibald Leitch (1866-1939) with a capacity of 65,000, Hampden's present capacity is c.52,000. This shows the South Stand which was damaged by fire in 1914 and again in 1945 when this two-storeyed press box was built on the roof. The present South Stand was opened in May 1999, part of a redevelopment package which included the West Stand at a total cost of £59 million, £8 million over the original budget. Queen's Park Football Club began playing at Queen's Park Recreation Ground in 1867. They moved to Queen's Drive in 1873, the first Hampden Park, but were forced to leave by the development of a new railway link. They moved again in 1884 before buying the present site in 1900 for £800 per acre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
