Scope and Content View of Torrisdale Castle from the west, Argyll and Bute Torrisdale Castle was originally a castellated Georgian Gothic house, designed for General Keith Macalister in 1815. In the early 20th century, extensive north and south wings were added to the house, using the same Gothic style. The west front of the original house is symmetrical, with a central turreted entrance porch at first-floor level. It is two-storeyed with a sunken basement and has angle-turrets. The windows incorporate both Early English and Perpendicular details. It is thought James Gillespie Graham (1777-1855), famous for his Gothic architecture, was responsible for the design of Torrisdale Castle. It is almost identical to the design used by Graham for Edmonston Castle in Lanarkshire, also in 1815. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
