Scope and Content View of Torrisdale Castle from the north-east, Argyll and Bute Torrisdale Castle was originally a castellated Georgian Gothic house, designed for General Keith Macalister in 1815. In the early 20th century, extensive north and south wings were added to the house, using the same Gothic style. This east front of the house incorporates building from both periods. From the octagonal turret in the centre as far as the first rectangular turret to the left is the original house, thought to have been designed by James Gillespie Graham (1777-1855). Graham designed the rear bay to be asymmetrical, being stepped up in two main stages towards the octagonal turret. The bays flanking the central block were designed 1904-10 by Henry Clifford (1852-1932) who specialised in late Gothic styles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
