Scope and Content View of Torrisdale Castle from the east, Argyll and Bute Torrisdale Castle was originally a castellated Georgian Gothic house, designed for General Keith Macalister in 1815, probably by James Gillespie Graham (1777-1855), a Scottish architect who designed asymmetrical Gothic buildings. Side wings, in the same style, were added to the main block 1904-10 by Henry Clifford, an architect who specialised in late Gothic styles. The side wings extend from the octagonal turret on the right, and the rectangular turret on the left. All the windows on the principal floor have rectangular hood-moulds, or labels, as do the arch-headed windows on the turrets. The windows on the ground floor have Perpendicular-style tracery, whilst the main-floor windows have Early English details. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
