Scope and Content View of Achlian House from the south-east, Argyll and Bute Achlian House, probably built in the late 18th century and described in 1811 as 'lately built', is likely to have been built for Alexander Campbell. He had leased Achlian from Duncan Campbell of Inverawe and then from his successor, Robert Campbell. The house is rectangular on plan and is two-storeyed with an attic. At the rear of the house there is a stair-tower which rises above the main wall-head. The conical-roofed tower is lit by two windows which have no surrounds, apart from a sandstone sill. The interior of the house was remodelled in 1953 but the original ground-floor plan survived. The central hall is flanked by a drawing room on one side and a dining room and kitchen on the other side. The upper floors have been entirely rebuilt. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
