Scope and Content Detail of first-floor landing in Achlian House, Argyll and Bute Achlian House, probably built in the late 18th century and described in 1811 as 'lately built', is likely to have been built for Alexander Campbell. He had leased Achlian from Duncan Campbell of Inverawe and then from his successor, Robert Campbell. This staircase has wooden treads, or horizontal surfaces of the steps, built around a stone pillar. This is a newel, or spiral staircase, and it continues at the same width up to the attic. The staircase is situated within a tower to the rear of the house. The interior of the house was remodelled in 1953 and the upper floors have been entirely rebuilt. However, the main reception rooms are still on the ground floor. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
