Scope and Content Prestonfield House, Duddingston, Edinburgh, from the west Prestonfield House, now a hotel, stands on the south side of Duddingston Loch. It was designed in the 1680s by Sir William Bruce for Sir James Dick, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, to replace an earlier house burnt down by a student demonstration in 1681. The white-harled west front, the main frontage of the house, is symmetrical, with twin curvilinear Dutch gables supporting chimney-stacks, and a Doric columned porte-cochère, a porch large enough to admit a carriage, added later in 1818. Sir Alexander Dick, grandson of Sir James and a noted physician, pioneered the cultivation of rhubarb, and sent 'supplies of this revolutionary plant', which he nurtured with horse manure on his Prestonfield estate, to the author, Dr Samuel Johnson.
