Scope and Content View of Kilberry Castle from the north-west, Argyll and Bute Kilberry Castle, originally a tower-house dating to the late 16th century, was refurbished in 1727 but damaged by fire in 1772. In 1844 the remains were incorporated into this mansion of Baronial style, which was extended in 1873. The Edinburgh architect Thomas Brown (c.1781-1850) designed the baronial mansion which was built 1844-9. In 1873 the mansion was greatly extended to the west and north by Charles Kinnear (1830-94) of Peddie & Kinnear, also working in a Baronial style. Kinnear repeated the features already used by Brown, such as crowstepped gables and angle-turrets, to maintain the architectural character. However, he added other features, including dormer windows, double-mullioned windows and canted bay windows. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
