Scope and Content View of Old Court House, Bolgam Street, Campbeltown, Argyll and Bute Campbeltown was founded by Archibald, 7th Earl of Argyll, in 1609. By 1700 it was a royal burgh. A small town, with fishing as one of its main industries, it began to expand in the early 19th century as a result of large-scale whisky production. The Old Court House is a two-storeyed block with a slated roof which has a courtyard to the rear. It has round-headed windows on the first floor, which light a spacious hall. Part of the structure may be as old as the 18th century but the building was remodelled in 1852-3 as a court house and prison and this is when it assumed its present appearance.
