Scope and Content View of Nos 58-62 Main Street, Campbeltown, Argyll and Bute Campbeltown was founded by Archibald, 7th Earl of Argyll, in 1609. By 1700 it was a royal burgh. A small town, with fishing as one of its main industries, it began to expand in the early 19th century as a result of large-scale whisky production. This three-bayed three-storeyed building is stucco-fronted which means it has been coated with a plaster composed of gypsum, sand and slaked lime. It is a plain building with a slated roof and has two dormer windows. At the foot of the central chimney-stack is a panel with the date 1813 and a heraldic crest surmounted by the motto 'MANU FORTE' which means 'with a strong hand'.
