Scope and Content Detail of first-floor room in Ballure House, Argyll and Bute Ballure is thought to have been built as a dower house, which is a house for a widow, by a MacDonald of Largie. The villa, dating to the early 19th century, originally consisted of an L-plan main block and a lower service wing to the north. This room, which has a semi-octagonal window bay, is above the entrance-hall. The window has panelled shutters framed by moulded architraves with circular ornaments in the corners. This window looks towards the Sound of Gigha. The ceiling is coved, or curved, as are other ceilings on the first floor. The ceiling has a cornice decorated with acanthus leaves surmounted by a frieze with modelled floral designs. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
