Scope and Content Detail of front door and entrance-hall of Ballure House, Argyll and Bute Ballure is thought to have been built as a dower house, which is a house for a widow, by a MacDonald of Largie. The villa, dating to the early 19th century, originally consisted of an L-plan main block and a lower service wing to the north. This main entrance doorway which is situated at ground-floor level has a round-headed opening. It is framed by pilasters, or narrow rectangles of stone which project slightly from the wall. The pilasters support a full entablature above the door. An entablature consists firstly of the architrave which rests on the capitals at the top of the pilasters. This is surmounted by the frieze and finally by the cornice at the top. The round-headed opening is decorated with moulding and impost bands. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
