Scope and Content View of courtyard gateway of Saddell Castle, Argyll and Bute Saddell Castle was built in 1508-10 by David Hamilton, Bishop of Argyll. It was attacked in 1558 but the extent of the damage is unknown. In 1650 much of it was repaired. It was restored in the 19th century and again in the 1970s. The castle stands within an enclosure, which, though altered, gives a good impression of a full tower-house establishment. The moulded arch-head springs from rectangular impost blocks at the base of the arch. The plain jambs below the imposts are narrow. Some of the stones used in the gateway are decorated with crudely incised masons' marks. The gateway dates to c.1770, but the crenellated parapet, two carved stone panels and the belfry above the gateway date to the late 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
