Scope and Content Detail of carving on west jamb of main entrance doorway of Dunderave Castle, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. The original doorway to the 16th-century tower is at ground level. To the right and left of the doorway, the top rybats, or dressed stones at the edges of the opening, appear to have formed brackets. The top rybat, to the left, bears a head with a crown. The lower rybat on the left of the doorway is carved in the shape of a head with a ruff. The rybats may have been reused. Stylistically, their links are with earlier buildings of the 1570s and 80s, such as Blairquhan House, Ayrshire. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
