Scope and Content Detail of balustrade on fourth floor of Dunderave Castle, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. The turnpike, or spiral, stair with a solid central post or newel, is in the original tower-house but was restored by Lorimer (1864-1929). On the fourth floor there is a wrought-iron balustrade at the stairhead with an elaborate thistle motif. The balustrade was executed by Thomas Hadden. Robert Lorimer was born and trained in Edinburgh, and by 1905 he was famous for his restoration work. He worked with a carefully selected group of craftsmen who produced work of outstanding quality.
