Scope and Content View of hall in Dunderave Castle from the east, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. The great hall, also known as the Hall of the Red Banners, occupies the full length of the main block of the 16th-century tower. To the right is the wide-lintelled fireplace which was repaired in 1911-12, above which is a relieving arch. Relieving arches are usually of rough construction and are placed in walls above openings to relieve the opening of the weight above it. The window to the left has wooden shutters restored in 1911-12. The door is in what was a window recess, or embrasure. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
