Scope and Content View of Kilberry Castle from east, Argyll and Bute Kilberry Castle, originally a tower-house dating to the late 16th century, was refurbished in 1727 but damaged by fire in 1772. In 1844 the remains were incorporated into this mansion of Baronial style, which was extended in 1873. The Edinburgh architect Thomas Brown (c.1781-1850) designed the baronial mansion which was built 1844-9. It has crowstepped gables and small conical-roofed turrets on all the angles, supported on corbels. There is a conical-roofed stair-tower rising above the wall-head, with a small stair-tower (left) which only goes to first-floor level. All the external masonry is entirely of 19th-century character, but one early window sill and two slits survive. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
