Scope and Content Aerial view of the River Almond and the Old and New Cramond Bridges, Cramond, Edinburgh northew Cramond Bridge, which carries the main road and traffic from Edinburgh to the Forth Road Bridge and the north, spans the River Almond a mile or so from Cramond village. It was built in 1824 to replace Old Cramond Bridge which dates from c.1500. The valley of River Almond (left) still retains a few of its original mill buildings. Old Cramond Bridge, which once carried the ancient turnpike road, stands downstream from the new bridge, now widened out of all recognition to cope with modern traffic. To the east of Old Cramond Bridge lay the old 'lands of Braehead' which were, according to legend, given to a local miller, Jock Howieson, as a reward for rescuing King James V who, while travelling in disguise, was attacked by thieves on the bridge.
