Scope and Content Braehead House, Cramond, Edinburgh, from the south Braehead House, built at the beginning of the 18th century, stands in the legendary 'lands of Braehead' to the east of Old Cramond Bridge. The 'lands' have now been developed, and a modern residential estate built within sight of the house. The original part of the house, built c.1700, has the typically Scottish feature of a large chimney-stack built above the centre of the south front. A Victorian extension, with a prominent crowstepped gable, was added c.1890 to the west end. In the 16th century, according to legend, Jock Howieson, a local miller, rescued King James V, going disguised about his realm, from an attack by thieves on Old Cramond Bridge, and was, in gratitude, rewarded with the adjoining lands of Braehead.
