Scope and Content St Katherine's House, Howdenhall Road, Liberton, Edinburgh, from the south St Katherine's House, named after the old Balm Well of St Katherine which lies within its grounds, is a Georgian house, originally dating from 1806, which stands on the east side of Howdenhall Road almost opposite the entrance to Mortonhall Crematorium. The original house, which has been altered and enlarged several times over the years, had a rather plain south range added shortly after 1806 to include a new entrance-hall in the middle. The elegant Regency porch and the two bay windows date from c.1835. According to tradition, the Balm Well, said to be a cure for 'cutaneous distempers', appeared when St Katherine, on a commission from Queen Margaret, wife of Malcolm Canmore, to bring holy oil from Mount Sinai, spilled some of the oil on that spot.
