Scope and Content Nether Liberton, Edinburgh northether or Lower Liberton, one of four hamlets in the parish of Liberton, lies at the junction of Craigmillar Park and Gilmerton Road. It grew up around the twin activities of milling and brewing, both of which relied on the water of the Braid Burn. The village, a group of small 18th-century cottages stood in a little hollow, grouped around the mill house, a short distance to the north of the Braid Burn. The row of pantiled cottages was converted into one house, the White House, in 1957. At the beginning of the 19th century, Nether Liberton was a thriving community of 300 people, lying within the Inch estate. It was of sufficient standing to hold a weekly market, and had a school and schoolmaster provided by the owners of the estate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
