Scope and Content The Old Toll-house, Currie, Edinburgh The village of Currie lies along the Lanark Road to the west of Juniper Green in the valley of the Water of Leith. It developed over the centuries as a farming and milling community around an ancient crossing of the river at the Currie Brig. The toll-house, completed c.1860, was one of several along the Lanark Road. This small building, with its central chimneys and bay window which originally supported the wheel that operated the toll gate, stood at the old boundary of the city of Edinburgh. At the old boundary of Edinburgh, everyone who passed to and from the city, either on foot, horseback or in a carriage, was obliged to pay a toll. Road tolls, which were introduced in 1750, were abolished throughout Scotland in 1883. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
