Scope and Content Millburn House, No 42 Canaan Lane, Morningside, Edinburgh Canaan Lane, a narrow lane running east from Morningside Road, lay within the old Canaan estate which extended from northewbattle Terrace to the Jordan Burn at the southern boundary of Morningside. It was feued with villas and cottages from c.1803. Millburn House, a Georgian villa of rough stone, stands close to the lane behind a narrow front garden. The house, dating from 1820, has a simple doorpiece with a carved wreath in the centre, and two gabled single-storeyed wings. The name Canaan first appeared in historical records in 1661. It may have been introduced in Covenanting times when the use of Biblical names was common practice, or by a gypsy community who were established in the area in the 16th century.
