Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating William and Robert Davidson, Pencaitland churchyard, East Lothian This gravestone commemorates William Davidson, a meal maker (someone producing oatmeal), who died in 1707 aged 57. Also buried here is Robert his son, a wright, who died in 1710 aged 24. This stone was erected by William's wife. An axe and two chisels, the tools of a wright, illustrate Robert's trade in life. At the foot of the stone, the skull and crossbones signify death, whilst the 'MEMENTO MORI' (Remember you must die) legend exhorts us to consider our own mortality. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
