Scope and Content The Hermitage of Braid, Braid Road, Morningside, Edinburgh, from the east The Hermitage of Braid, the Edinburgh mansion house of Charles Gordon of Cluny, was built in 1785 by the architect, Robert Burn, in the wooded valley of the Braid Burn. It lies within the old Braid estate, between Greenbank and Blackford. The Hermitage, in a picturesque setting amid lawns and mature trees, looks southwards to the Braid Burn. The house, in a mixture of Medieval and Classical styles, has turrets and battlements at the roofline, and Georgian symmetry below. It has been suggested that Charles Gordon asked the architect to introduce the mock battlements and corner turrets in memory of Braid Castle, the home of the de Brad family who owned the estate in the 12th century. No trace remains of the ancient castle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
