Scope and Content Ceiling cornice in Woodburn House, No 54 Canaan Lane, Morningside, Edinburgh Woodburn House, built in 1812, stands on the south side of Canaan Lane, a narrow lane running east from Morningside Road. It was one of several villas built c.1803 in the 'land of Canaan', the 'most pleasant of the Morningside estates'. This elaborate cornice, in the central apartment on its south-facing side of the house, shows fruit, leaves and cereals in intricate plasterwork detail. Woodburn House, built at a cost of £300, was occupied from 1818-60 by George Ross, an advocate, who was a great benefactor, and for a long time the sole supporter, of the Old Schoolhouse in Morningside Road. It is now part of the Scottish Health Service. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
