Scope and Content The Billiards House, Bella Vista, No 64 The Causeway, Duddingston, Edinburgh Bella Vista, an unusual house built in 1801, stands in a large wooded garden on the hill on the north side of The Causeway. The house was enlarged in 1875 when some interesting Victorian curiosities were built in the garden. This stone-built billiards house stands on the east side of the house. With its flat roof, and walls lined with pairs of curved pilasters topped by projecting stone 'pockets' at the roofline, it looks exactly like a billiards table. The Victorians devoted a great deal of thought to billiards rooms, both to their placing and fitting up. The billiards room was sometimes placed as 'an external appendage, approached by a short balcony or covered way' in order for the gentlemen to smoke. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
